Arriva oltreoceano, dopo gli appuntamenti estivi di Roma e Capri, il festival letterario internazionale Le Conversazioni diretto da Antonio Monda e Davide Azzolini. Sarà protagonista nella Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò della New York University per un ciclo di quattro incontri dedicati a cinema e letteratura.
Da settembre a dicembre, ospiti d’eccezione in conversazione con Antonio Monda saranno John Patrick Shanley, Molly Haskell, Michael Barker e Maaza Mengiste.

Il nuovo ciclo di appuntamenti conferma ancora una volta la forte identità di un festival diffuso che spazia tra diverse città e nazioni e che, dal 2006, ospita eventi a New York, Washington, Bogotà, Roma, Napoli, Capri, Palermo, Milano e Parigi.
Gli incontri partono lunedì 18 settembre (alle 7pm) con John Patrick Shanley sceneggiatore, regista e drammaturgo americano, il cui lavoro è stato più volte premiato nel cinema e nel teatro. Ha scritto sceneggiature memorabili, tra cui quella per il film Moonstruck (Stregata dalla luna) (1987) che gli è valsa un premio Oscar. La sua opera Doubt (Il dubbio) (2004) ha ricevuto il Premio Pulitzer per la drammaturgia e un Tony Award come miglior spettacolo teatrale.
Il 27 ottobre sarà la volta della critica cinematografica e scrittrice americana Molly Haskell. La sua carriera nel giornalismo cinematografico ha contribuito a plasmare la discussione critica sulla rappresentazione delle donne nel cinema. Conosciuta per i suoi scritti provocatori e incisivi, tra i quali From Reverence to Rape (1974), Haskell ha affrontato questioni di genere e sessualità nel cinema con intelligenza e passione, aprendo la strada a una nuova comprensione dell’influenza culturale delle immagini cinematografiche.
Il 2 novembre Monda converserà con Michael Barker, distributore cinematografico e cofondatore della Sony Pictures Classics che ha svolto un ruolo fondamentale nel portare il cinema d’autore straniero e indipendente al pubblico americano. Barker ha lavorato su numerosi film acclamati da pubblico e critica, tra i quali: La tigre e il dragone di Ang Lee e Amour di Michael Haneke. I suoi film hanno ricevuto 173 nomination agli Oscar, incluse candidature come miglior film per Chiamami col tuo nome di Luca Guadagnino, Whiplash di Damien Chazelle, Midnight in Paris di Woody Allen, An Education di Leone Scherfig, Capote di Bennet Miller.
Chiuderà il festival il 7 dicembre la scrittrice etiope naturalizzata statunitense Maaza Mengiste che ha lasciato l’Etiopia con la sua famiglia in seguito alla rivoluzione e ha vissuto in Nigeria, Kenya e negli Stati Uniti, dove ha completato gli studi. La sua opera letteraria, sia per quanto riguarda i romanzi che la saggistica, è incentrata soprattutto sul tema delle migrazioni umane e dell’Etiopia post-coloniale. Il suo romanzo Il re ombra (2021) è ambientato durante l’occupazione italiana dell’Etiopia.

Literature Festival/ After Rome and Capri, The Conversations arrive in New York. With six forgotten films to rediscover
Arriving overseas, after summer events in Rome and Capri, is the international literary festival Le Conversazioni directed by Antonio Monda and Davide Azzolini. It will be hosted at New York University’s Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò for a series of four meetings dedicated to cinema and literature.
From September to December, special guests in conversation with Antonio Monda will be John Patrick Shanley, Molly Haskell, Michael Barker and Maaza Mengiste.
The theme of the fall meetings will be Six forgotten gems / Six films
forgotten to be rediscovered. The initiative is organized by Dazzle Communication under the patronage of MiC, the support of SIAE and with Intesa Sanpaolo official sponsor.
The new round of appointments once again confirms the strong identity of a widespread festival that reaches across different cities and nations and that, since 2006, has been hosting events in New York, Washington, Bogota, Rome, Naples, Capri, Palermo, Milan and Paris.
The meetings start on Monday, September 18 (at 7pm) with John Patrick Shanley American screenwriter, director and playwright, whose work has been repeatedly awarded in film and theater. He has written memorable screenplays, including one for the film Moonstruck (Bewitched by the Moon) (1987), which earned him an Academy Award. His play Doubt (2004) received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for best play.
On October 27 it will be the turn of American film critic and writer Molly Haskell. Her career in film journalism has helped shape critical discussion about the representation of women in film. Known for her provocative and incisive writings, including From Reverence to Rape (1974), Haskell has addressed issues of gender and sexuality in film with intelligence and passion, paving the way for a new understanding of the cultural influence of film images.
On November 2, Monda will converse with Michael Barker, a film distributor and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics who has played a key role in bringing foreign and independent art-house cinema to American audiences. Barker has worked on numerous critically and publicly acclaimed films, including: Ang Lee’s The Tiger and the Dragon and Michael Haneke’s Amour. His films have received 173 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture nominations for Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Leone Scherfig’s An Education, and Bennet Miller’s Capote.
Closing the festival on December 7 will be U.S.-naturalized Ethiopian writer Maaza Mengiste, who left Ethiopia with her family following the revolution and lived in Nigeria, Kenya and the United States, where she completed her studies. Her literary work, both novels and nonfiction, focuses mainly on the theme of human migration and post-colonial Ethiopia. His novel The Shadow King (2021) is set during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia.
