Al Blu di Prussia la mostra “Alfa Castaldi” dedicata al grande fotografo Alfonso Castaldi, in arte Alfa, e curata da Maria Savarese.
Alfa racconta angoli di storia con i suoi fermoimmagine sin dagli anni ‘50. Le pareti sono ricche di sguardi e di momenti in bianco e nero, pezzi scelti grazie alla collaborazione tra la galleria e l’archivio Castaldi curato dal figlio del fotografo. Castaldi è diventato una figura chiave della fotografia italiana degli anni sessanta, settanta e ottanta, producendo un’enorme quantità di materiale e quello esposto è stato selezionato tra oltre 12.000 immagini.
Siamo a Milano e Alfa documenta quel fermento culturale che si muoveva al Bar Giamaica con altri intellettuali, scrittori e giornalisti. Si occupa principalmente di reportages all’epoca, viaggia e lavora per settimanali e mensili.
Conoscerà l’iconica Anna Piaggi, colei che inventò il concetto di “vintage”, con cui condividerà la vita e grazie alla quale scoprirà la sfera della moda dal suo studio appena aperto a Milano, sperimentando nuovi punti di vista e portando la sua esperienza in quest’ambito così diverso dalle sue origini. La collaborazione principale sarà quella con Vogue Italia nel 1969 da cui poi ne seguiranno anche altre con testate nazionali ed internazionali.
Un aspetto fondamentale della sua carriera sarà la ritrattistica di personaggi famosi ma anche la ricerca etnografica sul vestire italiano maschile, che diventerà poi una serie fotografica per “Uomo Vogue” negli anni ‘70. Le espressioni, oltre ai dettagli di abiti e acconciature, sono quello che colpisce di più. Da quelle maggiormente studiate delle top model a quelle più assorte ma anche ironiche dei vip come Monica Vitti, Versace, Gae Aulenti ed altri.
A completamento dell’esposizione, nella sala cinema della galleria sono proiettati una serie di video realizzati dall’archivio per un focus sulle ricerche fotografiche non presenti nell’esposizione, mentre all’Institut francais Grenoble di Napoli, venerdì 17 novembre ore 18, si inaugurerà una nuova sezione della mostra dal titolo “Parigi 59|60|88” sempre a cura di Maria Savarese, in cui sono presentati gli scatti realizzati da Castaldi durante diversi viaggi a Parigi appunto nel 1959, nel 1960, nel 1988, quali tributo ad una città che amò tantissimo.

Alfa Castaldi, the photographer who stopped the time between the reportage and the fashion
At Blu di Prussia the exhibition “Alfa Castaldi” dedicated to the great photographer Alfonso Castaldi, aka Alfa, and curated by Maria Savarese.
Alfa has been telling corners of history with his still images since the 1950s. The walls are filled with glimpses and black-and-white moments, pieces chosen through a collaboration between the gallery and the Castaldi archive curated by the photographer’s son. Castaldi became a key figure in Italian photography of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, producing an enormous amount of material, and the one on display was selected from more than 12,000 images.
We are in Milan and Alfa documents the cultural ferment that was going on at Bar Giamaica with other intellectuals, writers and journalists. At the time he was mainly involved in reportage, traveling and working for weekly and monthly magazines.
He will meet the icon Anna Piaggi, the one who invented the concept of “vintage”, with whom he will share his life and thanks to whom he will discover the fashion sphere from his newly opened studio in Milan, experimenting with new points of view and bringing his experience to this sphere so different from his origins. The most important collaboration will be with Vogue Italia in 1969, from which others will follow with national and international titles.
A key aspect of his career would be portraits of famous people, but also ethnographic research on Italian men’s clothing, which would later become a photographic series for “Uomo Vogue” in the 1970s. The expressions and the details of the clothes and hairstyles are the most striking. From the most studied of supermodels to the more absorbed but also ironic of celebrities such as Monica Vitti, Versace, Gae Aulenti and others.
To complete the exhibition, a series of videos from the archive will be shown in the gallery’s cinema room, focusing on photographic research not included in the exhibition, while at the Institut francais Grenoble in Naples, on Friday, November 17th at 6 p.m., a new section of the exhibition will be inaugurated entitled “Paris 59|60|88”, also curated by Maria Savarese, in which photographs taken by Castaldi during several trips to Paris in 1959, 1960 and 1988 will be presented as a tribute to a city he loved so much.
