Due film sull’America tra Trump e Biden con gli occhi dei registi italiani. Venerdì 23 febbraio al Cinema Astra “Stonebreakers” di Valerio Ciriaci e “West of Babylonia” di Emanuele Mengotti che sarà presente al Cinema Astra di via Mezzocannone 109 (foto).
Prosegue così la XIV edizione della rassegna “AstraDoc – Viaggio nel cinema del reale”. Con le due proiezioni di dopodomani si va alla scoperta della società statunistense, tra sogno di democrazia e grandi contraddizioni, nell’anno dell’elezioni presidenziali e nel pieno delle primarie che avranno il loro clou nel Super Tuesday ai primi di marzo.
Si parte alle 19 con “Stonebreakers” (Usa/Italia, 2022, 70’) di Valerio Ciriaci, documentario che racconta quanto accaduto nel mezzo della rivolta Black Lives Matter e dell’elezione presidenziale, ossia la battaglia sui monumenti storici. Un conflitto culturale che travolge statue di Colombo, confederati e padri fondatori, e mette in discussione il racconto mitico americano.
L’opera analizza il rapporto tra storia e lotta politica in un’America che, mai come oggi, è chiamata fare i conti con il proprio passato. Il film – presentato in anteprima mondiale al Festival dei Popoli 2022 do ve ha vinto la Menzione Speciale Miglior documentario italiano, il premio del Pubblico e il premio “Imperdibili” – sarà introdotto da Vincenzo Bavaro, professore associato di letteratura statunitense dell’Università di Napoli L’Orientale.
Alle 21 arriva ina sala il regista Emanuele Mengotti per presentare al pubblico napoletano il suo “West of Babylonia” (Italia, 2020, 82’) che ci catapulta nel deserto californiano dove esiste una località chiamata Slab City, insieme di camper, roulotte, tende ed edifici senza fondamenta, senza acqua corrente e senza elettricità, ai confini con una base militare dove vengono testati ordigni esplosivi.
Gli Slabber sono giovani e anziani, hippy e neo nazisti, fuorilegge e artisti. Tutti accomunati dalla voglia di essere liberi e di non dover rispondere alle regole della società americana. Tutto ciò che sta al di fuori di Slab City per loro è “Babylonia”. Il doc, che vede come direttore della fotografia Marco Tomaselli, è il primo di una trilogia ancora in progress. Two films about the States between Trump and Biden through the eyes of Italian filmmakers. On Friday, February 23rd, Valerio Ciriaci’s “Stonebreakers” and Emanuele Mengotti’s “West of Babylonia” will be featured at Cinema Astra on Via Mezzocannone 109.
Thus continues the 14th edition of the “AstraDoc – Viaggio nel cinema del reale” festival. With the two screenings the day after tomorrow, we go on a discovery of US society, between dreams of democracy and great contradictions, in the year of the presidential election and in the midst of the primaries that will have their highlight in the Super Tuesday in early March.
It starts at 7 p.m. with “Stonebreakers” (USA/Italy, 2022, 70′) by Valerio Ciriaci, a documentary that recounts what happened in the midst of the Black Lives Matter uprising and the presidential election, namely the battle over historical monuments. A cultural conflict that engulfs statues of Columbus, Confederates, and Founding Fathers, and challenges the American mythic narrative.
The work examines the relationship between history and political struggle in an America that is now called to reckon with its past like never before. The film, which premiered at the Festival dei Popoli 2022 and won the Special Mention Best Italian Documentary, the Audience Award and the “Unmissable” award, will be introduced by Vincenzo Bavaro, associate professor of US literature at the University of Naples L’Orientale.
At 9 p.m., director Emanuele Mengotti arrives at the cinema to present his “West of Babylonia” (Italy, 2020, 82′) to the Neapolitan audience. The movie immerses us in the Californian desert, where there is a place named Slab City. It is a place of campers, caravans, tents and buildings without foundations, without running water and without electricity, adjacent to a military base where explosives are tested.
The Slabbers in the area are a mix of young and old people, hippies, neo-Nazis, outlaws, and artists. All united by a desire to be free and not have to answer to the rules of American society. Everything outside Slab City is “Babylonia” to them. The doc, which has Marco Tomaselli as the director of photography, is the first in a trilogy still in progress. Presented as a world premiere at the Biografilm Festival in Bologna, the work has toured several international festivals.
