Le Conversazioni tornano a Capri. Il festival internazionale ideato da Antonio Monda e Davide Azzolini nell’isola azzurra avrà come ospite d’eccezione Lorenzo Jovanotti. Nella Villa San Michele di Anacapri si terranno i primi tre appuntamenti (ore 19) con gli scrittori italiani Massimiliano Virgilio (25 ), Igiaba Scego ( 26) e Vanessa Roghi (27 giugno).
Il festival ha aperto a New York con un ciclo di incontri, da febbraio a giugno 2023, con Leslie Jamison, Judith Thurman, Mary Karr, James Kirchick e Annette Insdorf.
Il programma italiano è partito da Roma con Nadia Terranova e Mattia Feltri (20 e 21 giugno) protagonisti degli incontri a Palazzo Merulana, sede della Fondazione Elena e Claudio Cerasi, vivace e dinamico centro di produzione culturale tra letteratura, cinema e arte, nel cuore della capitale.
Il prossimo autunno gli ospiti newyorchesi, protagonisti degli incontri alla NYU e alla New York Historical Society, saranno Maaza Mengiste, Molly Haskell, Michael Barker e il premio oscar John Patrick Shanley.
Ma torniamo alla manifestazione di Capri. Da mercoledì 28 giugno il festival come di consueto si trasferirà al tramonto (ore 19) a Piazzetta Tragara, per un appuntamento speciale con Lorenzo Jovanotti che aprirà gli incontri con gli ospiti internazionali: Hari Kunzru (29), Katie Kitamura (30 giugno) Joshua Cohen (primo luglio) e John Banville (2 luglio).
Il tema scelto per il 2023 è quello de Il Viaggio/Journey: Monda ne condividerà i diversi aspetti con tutti gli ospiti di questa edizione, dal turismo all’emigrazione. «Siamo felici e orgogliosi – afferma- di essere giunti alla diciottesima edizione delle Conversazioni. Con Davide Azzolini iniziammo a Piazzetta Tragara nel 2006, quasi per gioco. Oggi il festival è cresciuto e siamo fieri della sua dimensione internazionale che oltre a Capri ha coinvolto e coinvolge città come New York, Washington, Bogotá, Roma, Milano, Napoli, Palermo, Venezia e Parigi. E dal 2024 contiamo di estendere Le Conversazioni anche a Los Angeles. In questi anni hanno partecipato premi Nobel, Pulitzer, Booker, National Book Award, Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Strega e Pritzker, e in questi giorni a Capri ci saranno altri importanti ospiti internazionali».
Per l’occasione, i protagonisti hanno scritto un proprio contributo per il Festival sul tema scelto quest’anno. I testi saranno letti dagli autori stessi e distribuiti al pubblico in apertura di ogni incontro.
GLI APPUNTAMENTI
Villa San Michele – Anacapri (ore 19)
Domenica 25 giugno aprirà la diciottesima edizione caprese Massimiliano Virgilio, romanziere, sceneggiatore, documentarista e autore radiofonico italiano. Ha scritto diversi romanzi, tra i quali L’americano (Rizzoli, 2017) e Le creature (Rizzoli, 2020), entrambi vincitori di diversi premi letterari internazionali. Nel 2021 ha ricevuto la nomination ai Nastri d’argento per il soggetto del film Rosa, Pietra, Stella. Il suo ultimo romanzo è Il tempo delle stelle, pubblicato nel 2023 da Rizzoli.
Lunedì 26 giugno sarà ospite del festival la scrittrice e giornalista italiana, di origine somala, Igiaba Scego, che si occupa principalmente di tematichedi migrazioni e di culture e letterature africane. Tra i suoi romanzi, La mia casa è dove sono (Rizzoli, 2010)le è valso il premio Mondello nel 2011 e La linea del colore (Bompiani, 2020) ha vinto il premio Napoli nel 2020. Il suo ultimo libro, Cassandra a Mogadiscio (Bompiani, 2023), è candidato al premio Strega 2023.
A chiudere gli appuntamenti di Villa San Michele, martedì 27 giugno, sarà Vanessa Roghi storica, autrice televisiva e scrittrice italiana che si occupa in particolare di tematiche inerenti la storia della scuola e di nuove generazioni. Fra i suoi libri più recenti Eroina (Mondadori, 2022) in cui affronta il problema della droga, e Mia patria sono gli oppressi una storia illustrata di Don Milani, appena pubblicata da Momo (maggio 2023).

Piazzetta Tragara – Capri (ore 19)
Da mercoledì 28 giugno il festival si svolgerà a Piazzetta Tragara: Lorenzo Jovanotti, intervistato da Antonio Monda, si racconterà attraverso il tema de Il Viaggio/Journey.
Giovedì 29 giugno ci sarà il romanziere e giornalista britannico Hari Kunzru autore tra gli altri di L’imitatore (Einaudi, 2003), per il quale è stato nominato da Granta tra i migliori giovani scrittori britannici. Il suo ultimo lavoro, Lacrime bianche, è stato pubblicato in Italia da Saggiatore nel 2018.
La scrittrice americana Katie Kitamura sarà protagonista dell’incontro di venerdì 30 giugno. Autrice di Gone to the Forest e di Knock-out entrambi finalisti al New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award, rispettivamente nel 2012 e nel 2014. Tra i suoi romanzi più noti pubblicati in Italia da Bollati Boringhieri Una separazione (2017) e Tra le nostre parole (2022) finalista al National Book Award e al Joyce Carol Oates Prize nel 2021, è stato nominato dal New York Times tra i cinque migliori romanzi dello stesso anno.
Joshua Cohen, premio Pulitzer nel 2022, arriverà sabato 1 luglio. Definito dal New York Times “uno dei più importanti scrittori americani” e “straordinario ricercatore in prosa, sicuramente uno dei più prodigiosi romanzieri americani” dal New Yorker. Book Award for Fiction nel 2021 e gli è valso il premio Pulitzer nel 2022.
John Banville romanziere e giornalista irlandese già vincitore delMan Booker Prize, chiuderà il festival domenica 2 luglio. Noto anche con lo pseudonimo Benjamin Black sotto il quale ha scritto cinque romanzi. Il suo libro La spiegazione dei fatti è stato finalista per il Booker Prize nel 1989, pubblicato in Italia da Guanda (1991), mentre Il mare ha vinto il Man Booker Prize nel 2005 (Guanda, 2006). Nel 2011 ha ricevuto il Franz Kafka Prize. Il suo ultimo romanzo è Il dubbio del killer (Guanda)

International Festival/ The Conversations return to Capri. Theme is travel: Jovanotti tells his story in the Piazzetta (Tragara)
The Conversations return to Capri. The international festival conceived by Antonio Monda and Davide Azzolini will have Lorenzo Jovanotti as special guest. In Anacapri’s Villa San Michele, the first three appointments (7 p.m.) will be held with Italian writers Massimiliano Virgilio (25 ), Igiaba Scego ( 26) and Vanessa Roghi (June 27).
The festival opened in New York through a series of meetings, from February to June 2023, with Leslie Jamison, Judith Thurman, Mary Karr, James Kirchick and Annette Insdorf.
The Italian program started in Rome with Nadia Terranova and Mattia Feltri (June 20 and 21) as the protagonists of the meetings at Palazzo Merulana, home of the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation, a lively and dynamic center of cultural production between literature, cinema and art, in the heart of the capital.
Next fall the New York guests, protagonists of the meetings at NYU and the New York Historical Society, will be Maaza Mengiste, Molly Haskell, Michael Barker and Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley.
But back to the Capri event. From Wednesday, June 28, the festival as usual will move to Piazzetta Tragara at sunset (7 p.m.) for a special appointment with Lorenzo Jovanotti who will open the meetings with international guests: Hari Kunzru (June 29), Katie Kitamura (June 30) Joshua Cohen (July 1) and John Banville (July 2).
The theme chosen for 2023 is The Journey/Journey: Monda will share its different aspects with all the guests of this edition, from tourism to emigration. “We are happy and proud,” he says, “to have reached the 18th edition of the Conversations. With Davide Azzolini we started in Piazzetta Tragara in 2006, almost for fun. Today the festival has grown and we are proud of its international dimension, which in addition to Capri has involved and involves cities such as New York, Washington, Bogotá, Rome, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Venice and Paris. And from 2024 we plan to extend Le Conversazioni to Los Angeles as well. In recent years, Nobel, Pulitzer, Booker, National Book Award, Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Strega and Pritzker prizes have participated, and these days in Capri there will be other important international guests.”
For the occasion, the protagonists have written their own contribution for the Festival on this year’s chosen theme. The texts will be read by the authors themselves and distributed to the audience at the opening of each meeting.
THE APPOINTMENTS
Villa San Michele – Anacapri (7 p.m.)
On Sunday, June 25, Massimiliano Virgilio, an Italian novelist, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker and radio author, will open the 18th Capri edition. He has written several novels, including L’americano (Rizzoli, 2017) and Le creature (Rizzoli, 2020), both winners of several international literary awards. In 2021 he received a Silver Ribbon nomination for the subject of the film Rosa, Pietra, Stella. His latest novel is The Time of Stars, published in 2023 by Rizzoli.
On Monday, June 26, Somali-born Italian writer and journalist Igiaba Scego, who deals mainly with migration issues and African cultures and literatures, will be the festival’s guest speaker. Among her novels, La mia casa è dove sono (Rizzoli, 2010) won the Mondello Prize in 2011 and La linea del colore (Bompiani, 2020) was given the Naples Prize in 2020. Her latest book, Cassandra in Mogadishu (Bompiani, 2023), is a candidate for the Strega Prize 2023.
Closing the Villa San Michele events on Tuesday, June 27, will be Italian historian, television author and writer Vanessa Roghi, who focuses on issues related to school history and new generations. Her most recent books include Eroina (Mondadori, 2022) in which she addresses the problem of drugs, and Mia patria sono gli oppressi an illustrated history of Don Milani, just published by Momo (May 2023).

Thursday, June 29 will feature British novelist and journalist Hari Kunzru author of, among others, The Imitator (Einaudi, 2003), for which he was named among the best young British writers by Granta. His latest work, White Tears, was published in Italy by Saggiatore in 2018.
American writer Katie Kitamura will be the protagonist of the meeting on Friday, June 30. Author of Gone to the Forest and Knock-out both finalists for the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Among her best-known novels published in Italy by Bollati Boringhieri A Separation (2017) and Between Our Words (2022) a finalist for the National Book Award and the Joyce Carol Oates Prize in 2021, was named by the New York Times as one of the five best novels of the same year.
Joshua Cohen, a Pulitzer Prize winner in 2022, will arrive on Saturday, July 1. Called “one of America’s most important writers” by The New York Times and “extraordinary prose researcher, surely one of America’s most prodigious novelists” by The New Yorker. Book Award for Fiction in 2021 and earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 2022.
John Banville Irish novelist and journalist and former winner of the Man Booker Prize, will close the festival on Sunday, July 2. Also known by the pen name Benjamin Black under which he has written five novels. His book The Explanation of Facts was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 1989, published in Italy by Guanda (1991), while The Sea won the Man Booker Prize in 2005 (Guanda, 2006). In 2011 he received the Franz Kafka Prize. His latest novel is The Killer’s Doubt (Guanda).
