Un viandante dello sguardo, il napoletano Fabio Donato. Che, attraverso le immagini, mette in moto un racconto poetico. Del suo itinerario artistico si occupa la galleria FrameArsArtes di Napoli che propone la mostra a cura di Paola Pozzi dal titolo “Desiderio di luce” con testo critico di Alessandro Manna insieme a una retrospettiva (Fabio Donato 1969-2022) di oltre centocinquanta fotografie in piccolo formato, selezionate in un archivio di oltre quattrocentomila scatti. In collaborazione con l’associazione Arti in Sinergia, accompagnata da una riflessione di Olga Scotto di Vettimo.

L’esposizione nello spazio artistico di Corso Vittorio Emanuele n. 525 durerà fino a mercoledì 20 dicembre. E sarà l’occasione per presentare, mercoledì 13 dicembre alle 18 la collana editoriale “Frammenti di un archivio” della Paparo Editori.
Spiega Donato: «È la prima mostra dopo diversi anni. Un’occasione per mostrare al pubblico la complessità di oltre cinquant’anni di ricerca. Tutta la mia attività vuole essere di stimolo al pensiero, suscitare dubbi e incertezze operando su concetti astratti. Per questo, spesso, le mie opere non hanno un titolo perché è inutile».
Classe 1947, Donato inizia giovanissimo la propria carriera nel 1970 quando, ancora studente di Architettura, parte per l’India. Un viaggio che segnerà l’inizio della sua attività come fotografo attento ai cambiamenti culturali in atto nella società secondo due direttrici: la ricerca artistica intesa come espressione di una poetica visuale che indaga i temi di tempo, movimento e soglia ed il reportage dei movimenti contemporanei nelle arti italiane e internazionali.
Da questa ricerca, sviluppata tra il 1970 e il 2006, nascono progetti come «La Città» che il gallerista Lanfranco Colombo espone a Milano insieme ai lavori di Luigi Ghirri, Franco Fontana, Luigi Albertini. Il tema delle città ricorrerà spesso nella sua opera.
Luoghi reali e metafisici insieme, palcoscenici di relazioni, confronti, aspirazioni, contrasti di moltitudini e dettagli da andare a scovare. Da quelli umani di polpacci e piedi scalzi nelle periferie indiane degli anni ’70, segno della precarietà materiale e simbolo della ricchezza umana – esposti a Milano nel 1971, Targa d’Argento alla Biennale di Reportage di Fermo, l’anno dopo – a quelli urbani, di finestre, televisori, monitor. Confini tra il privato e l’esterno; soglie tra spazi, tempi e dimensioni mentali dell’altro da sé da osservare.
Una vita in movimento che ha però un centro magico, Napoli. «È una città meravigliosa, ed è imbarazzante che il mondo se ne stia accorgendo solo adesso. Da giovane, sono andato via per alcuni anni, ma ho scelto di tornare per vivere e documentare la sua forte presenza nella storia culturale degli ultimi cinquant’anni».

The exhibition/ FrameArsArtes: the desire for light in the images of Fabio Donato. Witness of the cultural history of Naples in the last 50 years
A wanderer of the gaze, the Neapolitan Fabio Donato. Who, through images, sets in motion a poetic narrative. The FrameArsArtes Gallery in Naples is taking care of his artistic itinerary with an exhibition entitled “Desiderio di luce”, curated by Paola Pozzi, with a critical text by Alessandro Manna, and a retrospective (Fabio Donato 1969-2022) of over one hundred and fifty small-format photographs selected from an archive of over four hundred thousand shots. In collaboration with the association Arts in Synergy, accompanied by a reflection by Olga Scotto di Vettimo.
Vernissage on Wednesday, December 6th, at 7 p.m. The exhibition in the art space at Corso Vittorio Emanuele no. 525, will last until Wednesday, December 20th. And it will be the occasion to present, on Wednesday, December 13th, at 6 p.m., the publishing series “Fragments of an Archive” by Paparo Editori.
Donato explains: “This is the first exhibition in several years. An opportunity to show the public the complexity of more than 50 years of research. All my activity is meant to provoke thought, to create doubts and uncertainties by working with abstract concepts. That is why my works often have no title, because it is unnecessary”.
Born in 1947, Donato began his career at a very young age, in 1970, when, still a student of architecture, he left for India. A journey that would mark the beginning of his activity as a photographer attentive to the cultural changes taking place in society along two lines: artistic research understood as the expression of a visual poetics that investigates the themes of time, movement and threshold, and the reportage of contemporary movements in Italian and international art.
This research, developed between 1970 and 2006, gave rise to projects such as “The City”, which the gallery owner Lanfranco Colombo was exhibiting in Milan together with works by Luigi Ghirri, Franco Fontana and Luigi Albertini.
The theme of the city will often recur in his work. Real and metaphysical places together, stages of relationships, comparisons, aspirations, contrasts of crowds and details to be walked and to be excavated.
From the human ones of calves and bare feet in the Indian suburbs of the 1970s, a sign of material precariousness and a symbol of human wealth – exhibited in Milan in 1971, silver plaque at the Reportage Biennale in Fermo the following year – to the urban ones of windows, televisions, monitors. Borders between the private and the external; doors between spaces, times and mental dimensions of the other-him-self to be observed.
A life on the road, however, that has a magical center, Naples. “It’s a wonderful city, and it’s embarrassing that the world is only now realizing this. As a young man, I went away for a few years, but I chose to come back to live here and document its strong presence in the cultural history of the last fifty years.”
