Tonia Erbino (foto copertina) nasce a New York. Fin dall’infanzia la sua vocazione artistica emerge in modo evidente. Si diploma con ottimi voti al Liceo artistico di Napoli e completa la sua formazione artistica conseguendo il diploma di laurea all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli con il massimo dei voti. Partecipa, fin da giovanissima, a numerose mostre collettive a cui seguono nel tempo svariate mostre personali. A oggi la sua ricerca artistica continua, ininterrotta e incessante. Consegue master e corsi di perfezionamento in storia dell’arte. Dal 2007 insegna arte nella scuola pubblica italiana.
Quando nasce Tonia come artista?
«Le predisposizioni spesso sono consapevoli; con il tempo si diventa, poi, sempre più consci di essere inclini verso qualcosa; un talento di cui si viene dotati alla nascita, frutto di un percorso in divenire, nel quale ci si sente costantemente orientati. Una sorta di rotta innata, di bussola interiore, che orienta pensieri, guida passi e determina scelte. Con il trascorrere del tempo, ci si accorge di essere e di agire assecondando quel modo interiore di sentire. Il mio canale espressivo è stato da sempre quello artistico; ho riconosciuto in esso la mia corsia privilegiata, percorrendola, in modo naturale e senza forzature».
Tonia, cosa rappresenta l’arte per te?
«L’arte mi consente di incanalare energie che altrimenti resterebbero represse; mi fornisce la possibilità di dare espressione alla mia visione della vita; mi aiuta a rielaborare esperienze, a codificarle e a ristrutturarle in un nuovo ordine di senso. Mi aiuta ad orientarmi e a trovare il mio posto».
Qual è stata la tua prima mostra? E cosa ha significato per te?
«La mia prima mostra risale al periodo in cui ero una studentessa della sezione di Pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, alla Cattedra di Gianni Pisani. Fui scelta, insieme a un esiguo numero di artiste, per una collettiva che si tenne presso l’Aurora Art Gallery di Scafati. Fu il primo riconoscimento che mi dette lo sprono per investire ancora di più, in termini di impegno e di caparbietà, in quella che pensavo, allora come oggi, essere la mia strada».
Cosa consiglieresti a quelli che iniziano un percorso nella pittura, nell’arte?
«Ho ben chiaro che chi oggi si appresta a intraprendere un percorso artistico si trova davanti a un bivio: produrre opere commerciali, vendibili, oppure condurre un percorso di ricerca avulso da logiche di mercato. Può accadere tuttavia che le due cose si combinino, cioè che opere, frutto di una ricerca originale e introspettiva, siano notate da qualche galleria con un grande nome che inizia a strutturare l’immagine dell’artista e della sua produzione. Il rischio che gli artisti corrono è di veder confezionare la loro arte e di diventare un cliché di se stessi. Si verifica anche, se pur raramente, che artisti dotati di forte personalità e carattere, riconosciuti e affermati, riescano a restare autentici e originali. Ci sono poi gli artisti che guadagnano facendo altro; un lavoro magari afferente alla sfera artistica; riescono ad essere sinceri, in termini di ricerca e di opere, ma devono trovare il tempo per dedicarsi quotidianamente all’arte, non riducendola ad una mera occupazione occasionale o dei giorni di festa. Penso, infatti, che l’artista non debba mai smettere di essere tale, anche nel quotidiano, e che ogni sfera e ambito di esperienza debbano confluire nel suo campo di ricerca e di espressione. Sostanzialmente, credo che l’unico consiglio da dare sia quello di intraprendere tale percorso solo se è ciò per cui ci si senta veramente predisposti. Essere artisti significa, infatti, per me calibrare tutta la vita in questa direzione, compiendo scelte compatibili; significa considerare l’arte qualcosa di serio, da non confondere con il serioso, e impegnarsi nella ricerca personale, ma anche nello studio degli artisti del passato. Il fine primario, l’obiettivo principale deve essere il conseguimento di una cifra stilistica personale, riconoscibile, ma soprattutto viscerale e sincera».
Dopo la laurea all’Accademia di Belle Arti a Napoli, master e corsi di specializzazione, sei entrata nel mondo della scuola. Come prosegue la tua ricerca artistica?
«Il mondo della scuola e l’insegnamento dell’arte mi hanno consentito di non scindermi, di restare coerente con il mio principale ambito di interesse. La scelta di una scuola non distante dal luogo dove vivo, lo studio annesso alla mia casa, una grande forza di volontà e senso del sacrificio, mi hanno poi consentito di dedicarmi quasi quotidianamente alla pittura, eccetto i periodi in cui volontariamente necessito di pause per trovare la giusta ispirazione»
Sei docente di Arte e Immagine. Credi di riuscire o quantomeno di essere riuscita finora nel difficile obiettivo di far avvicinare i ragazzi all’arte?
«Penso che ciò che mi rende credibile come insegnante sia la profonda passione e il grande amore che nutro per la materia che insegno. I ragazzi hanno antenne sensibili e colgono la differenza tra chi insegna con passione e chi lo fa come scelta occupazionale obbligata. Sempre i ragazzi colgono e apprezzano la progettualità e la professionalità di chi arriva in aula non affidandosi al caso. Credo, pertanto, di avere concorso fondamentale a sviluppare in tanti ragazzi, e di conseguenza in tante famiglie, il rispetto per l’Arte; soprattutto contribuisco, a ragione, ad elevare la materia alla pari dignità di tutte le altre, in un sistema che drasticamente ne riduce sempre più le ore di insegnamento, ravvisando in ciò una scelta dicotomica con la ricchezza del patrimonio storico-artistico che il nostro Bel Paese possiede. Non è stato neanche raro scoprire talenti in erba che hanno poi scelto di proseguire gli studi in questa direzione».

When was Tonia born as an artist?
«One’s predispositions are often conscious; with time one becomes more and more aware of being inclined towards something; a talent one is endowed with at birth, the result of a developing path, in which one feels constantly oriented. A sort of innate course, an inner compass, which orients thoughts, guides steps and determines choices. With the passage of time, one realises that one is and acts in accordance with that inner way of feeling. My channel of expression has always been the artistic one; I have recognised in it my privileged lane, following it naturally and without forcing it»
Tonia, what does art represent for you?
«Art allows me to channel energies that would otherwise remain repressed; it gives me the opportunity to give expression to my vision of life; it helps me to rework experiences, to codify them and restructure them into a new order of meaning. It helps me orient myself and find my place»
When was your first exhibition? And what did it mean to you?
«My first exhibition was when I was a student in the painting section at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, at the Gianni Pisani Chair. I was chosen, along with a small number of female artists, for a group exhibition held at the Aurora Art Gallery in Scafati. It was the first recognition that gave me the spur to invest even more, in terms of commitment and stubbornness, in what I thought, then as now, was my path»
What would you advise those starting out on a path in painting, in art?
«It is quite clear to me that anyone who is about to embark on an artistic career today is faced with a crossroads: either to produce commercial, saleable works, or to conduct a path of research detached from market logic. It may happen, however, that the two things are combined, i.e. that works, the result of original and introspective research, are noticed by some gallery with a big name that begins to structure the image of the artist and his production. The risk that artists run is to have their art packaged and become a cliché of themselves. It also happens, albeit rarely, that artists with a strong personality and character, recognised and established, manage to remain authentic and original. Then there are the artists who earn their money doing something else; a job that is perhaps related to the artistic sphere; they manage to be sincere, in terms of research and works, but they must find the time to devote themselves to art on a daily basis, not reducing it to a mere occasional occupation or holiday. I think, in fact, that the artist should never stop being an artist, even in everyday life, and that every sphere and sphere of experience should flow into his or her field of research and expression. Basically, I think the only advice to be given is to embark on such a path only if it is what one really feels predisposed to. For me, being an artist means calibrating one’s entire life in this direction, making compatible choices; it means considering art something serious, not to be confused with the serious, and committing oneself to personal research, but also to the study of artists of the past. The primary goal, the main objective must be the attainment of a personal, recognisable, but above all visceral and sincere stylistic mark»
After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and the various masters and specialisation courses, you entered the world of education. Would you like to tell us how your work progressed?
«The world of school and teaching art allowed me not to split up, to remain coherent with my main area of interest. The choice of a school not far from where I live, the studio annexed to my home, a great willpower and sense of sacrifice, have then allowed me to devote myself almost daily to painting, except for periods when I voluntarily need breaks to find inspiration»
You are a teacher of Art and Image. Do you think you succeed, or at least have succeeded so far, in the difficult goal of introducing children to art?
«I think what makes me credible as a teacher is the deep passion and love I have for the subject I teach. Kids have sensitive antennae and they grasp the difference between those who teach with passion and those who do it as a compulsory occupational choice. Students always grasp and appreciate the planning and professionalism of those who come to the classroom not relying on chance. I believe, therefore, that I have made a fundamental contribution to developing in many young people, and consequently in many families, respect for art. Above all, I have rightly contributed to elevating the subject to the same dignity as all others, in a system that drastically reduces the number of hours of teaching, seeing this as a dichotomous choice with the wealth of historical and artistic heritage that our beautiful country possesses. Nor has it been rare to discover budding talents who have then chosen to continue their studies in this direction»
ABOUT TONIA
Tonia Erbino was born in New York. Since childhood, her artistic ‘vocation’ has been evident. She graduated with excellent marks from the Liceo Artistico in Naples and completed her artistic training by graduating from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples with top marks. From a very young age, Tonia Erbino took part in numerous group exhibitions, which were followed over time by various solo exhibitions. To date, her artistic research continues, uninterrupted and unceasing. She obtains a master’s degree and specialisation courses in art history. Since 2007, she has been called upon to teach art in Italian public schools.
