Turandot, bellissima principessa dal cuore di ghiaccio, torna al teatro di San Carlo. Ultimo capolavoro di Giacomo Puccini, compositore di cui nel 2024 ricorrono i 100 anni dalla morte, inaugurerà la nuova stagione (sabato 9 dicembre alle 20). Ne curerà la regia, Vasily Barkhatov, al suo debutto nel massimo napoletano, mentre dirigerà orchestra e coro Dan Ettinger.
La storia è quella di Pechino ai tempi delle favole. La principessa mette alla prova i suoi aspiranti consorti sottoponendoli a tre enigmi difficilissimi: chi sbaglia, sarà decapitato dal boia. Alla fine sarà a prevalere sarà Calaf, figlio del re dei Tartari.
Nato a Mosca nel 1983, Barkhatov è tra i registi più richiesti della sua generazione, tra le ultime produzioni operistiche che ha firmato si ricordano Simon Boccanegra di Giuseppe Verdi alla Deutsche Oper Berlin e Le Grand Macabre di György Ligeti all’Opera di Francoforte. Le scene sono di Zinovy Margolin mentre firma i costumi Galaya Solodovnikova, le luci sono di Alexander Sivaev. Lo spettacolo sarà trasmesso da Rai Cultura in prima serata su Rai5 alle 21.15.
Un cast internazionale: in primo piano, Sondra Radvanovsky, una delle grandi voci del nostro tempo, che dà voce a Turandot; al suo fianco Yusif Eyvazov nei panni del principe Calaf e Rosa Feola in quelli di Liù. A loro, si alterneranno: Oksana Dyka (Turandot), Seok Jong Baek (Calaf), Amina Edris (Liù).
Ci saranno anche Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Timur), Alessio Arduini (Ping), Gregory Bonfatti (Pang), Francesco Pittari (Pong), Sergio Vitale (Un mandarino). Completano il cast Valeria Attianese (Prima ancella), Linda Airoldi (Seconda ancella), Vasco Maria Vagnoli (Il Principino di Persia). Maestro del Coro è Piero Monti.
L’ opera in tre atti e cinque quadri, su libretto di Giuseppe Adami e Renato Simoni, Turandot mancava dalle scene sancarliane dal 2015 e andrà in scena nella versione con il finale di Franco Alfano. Sette in tutto le recite, in programma dal 9 al 17 dicembre.
Proprio stamattina, al San carlo è stato consegnato il “Premio al merito civico 2023” della Regione Campania per la solidarietà e l’inclusione delle persone con disabilità nell”Auditorium della Regione Campania.

Turandot/ The beautiful princess with a heart of ice opens the San Carlo’s season. Which receives the civic merit award for solidarity and inclusion
Turandot, the beautiful princess with a heart of ice, is back at the San Carlo Theatre. The last masterpiece of Giacomo Puccini, a composer whose centenary will fall in 2024, will open the new season (Saturday, December 9th at 8 pm). It will be directed by Vasily Barkhatov, making his debut at the Neapolitan Massimo, while the orchestra and chorus will be conducted by Dan Ettinger.
The story is that of Beijing in the age of fairytales. The princess tests her potential suitors by asking them three extremely difficult riddles: whoever answers incorrectly will be beheaded by the executioner. In the end, it is Calaf, the son of the Tartar king, who wins.
Born in Moscow in 1983, Barkhatov is one of the most sought-after directors of his generation; his most recent opera productions include Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre at the Frankfurt Opera. The sets are by Zinovy Margolin, the costumes by Galaya Solodovnikova and the lighting by Alexander Sivaev. The performance will be broadcast by Rai Cultura in prime time on Rai5 at 21:15.
An international cast: Sondra Radvanovsky, one of the great voices of our time, will lead the cast as Turandot, accompanied by Yusif Eyvazov as Prince Calaf and Rosa Feola as Liù. Alternating with them will be Oksana Dyka (Turandot), Seok Jong Baek (Calaf) and Amina Edris (Liù).
There will also be Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Timur), Alessio Arduini (Ping), Gregory Bonfatti (Pang), Francesco Pittari (Pong), Sergio Vitale (A Mandarin). Completing the cast are Valeria Attianese (First Handmaid), Linda Airoldi (Second Handmaid), Vasco Maria Vagnoli (The Little Prince of Persia). Maestro of the choir is Piero Monti.
The opera in three acts and five scenes, with a libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, Turandot, has been missing from the stages of San Carlo since 2015 and will be staged in the version with the finale by Franco Alfano. A total of seven performances are scheduled from December 9th to 17th.
Just this morning, in the Auditorium of the Campania Region, the San Carlo Theatre received the “Civic Merit Award 2023” of the Campania Region for solidarity and integration of people with disabilities.
