Viene dall’Università Federico II, la nuova project scientist dell’Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), Mariafelicia De Laurentis (foto), professoressa di astronomia e astrofisica.
E lei stessa spiega: «L’Event Horizon Telescope ha aperto una nuova era nello studio dei buchi neri, trasformando in realtà ciò che fino a pochi anni fa sembrava impossibile».
Questa nomina rappresenta una sfida entusiasmante: «Il mio impegno sarà rivolto a rafforzare la capacità dell’EHT di rispondere alle grandi domande della fisica e dell’astrofisica, lavorando con la comunità internazionale per sviluppare nuove strategie di osservazione e analisi. Il futuro ci riserva scoperte straordinarie, e sono pronta a dare il massimo per contribuire a questa impresa scientifica senza precedenti».
Il Project Scientist è una figura centrale nella direzione scientifica dell’EHT, con la responsabilità di definire e guidare la strategia di ricerca della collaborazione. Questo ruolo prevede non solo il coordinamento delle attività scientifiche e l’ottimizzazione delle osservazioni e delle analisi, ma anche la visione a lungo termine del progetto, orientandolo verso nuove scoperte. È la prima volta che una donna ricopre questo ruolo all’interno della collaborazione, segnando un cambio di passo significativo nella rappresentanza femminile ai vertici della ricerca scientifica internazionale.
Mariafelicia De Laurentis è anche ricercatrice INFN. Ha insegnato alla Tomsk State Pedagogical University (Russia) e all’Institut für Theoretische Physik della Goethe-University di Francoforte (Germania), dove è entrata a far parte della collaborazione Event Horizon Telescope.

The new Project Scientist for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), Mariafelicia De Laurentis, Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, comes from the University Federico II.
She explains: The Event Horizon Telescope has opened up a new era in the study of black holes, making a reality of what seemed impossible just a few years ago.
This appointment represents an exciting challenge: ‘My commitment will be to strengthen the EHT’s ability to answer the big questions in physics and astrophysics, working with the international community to develop new observing and analysis strategies. The future holds extraordinary discoveries for us, and I am ready to do my utmost to contribute to this unprecedented scientific endeavour.
The Project Scientist is a central figure in the scientific leadership of the EHT, responsible for defining and guiding the research strategy of the collaboration. This role involves not only coordinating scientific activities and optimising observations and analyses, but also taking a long-term view of the project and steering it towards new discoveries. This is the first time that a woman has held this role within the collaboration, marking a significant change in the representation of women at the forefront of international scientific research.
